Can somebody post here the best articles about modern construction and architecture?
Q. I am writing an elective on the topic "What is the difference between ideas and reality, in the concept of what can be imagined and what can actually be built after that?" And honestly I am stuck right now. If you post me some articles about construction and architecture maybe it will help me. Or give me some ideas. Specially on BIG building projects that were changed in their development cause of problems. Thank you!

A. Look at Architects such as Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Coop Himmelblau. They have been described as deconstructivist architects and they create fantastic, free flowing forms that seem to defy gravity and look out of this world. Zaha Hadid has very organic designs and has designed alot of buildings in Dubai and is designing an amazing aquatic centre for the London Olympics. Frank Gehry built the Stata complex at MIT and they had major problems with the design, materials, weather proofing and cost. It became a big problem and MIT were suing him over it. The building is awesome though. Check out their work and related stories about them and you may find some info to help you out. Hope this helps...

Why was architecture and construction more beautiful and sturdy in the past?
Q. For example the buildings in Rome, England, India, Paris, even Jerusalem or the Great wall of China - they have more detail, beauty and stand out compared to the flimsy structures today even though there's more technology and resources at a builder's disposal compared to hundreds of years ago.
Asked by Icecream - Fri May 1 02:59:32 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well beautiful is in the eye of the beholder and sturdy is filtered by the fact that thousands of non-sturdy buildings from the past have collapsed. And many of those buildings had/have expensive hand carved detail that honors God, but can't be seen by humans walking around below. I am one who finds many of those buildings cluttered and like the sweep of modern work (truly modern design, not just boxes) But one real answer can be found if you go to one of those standing, sturdy, old buildings and A) try to clean all the detail and B) Bring it up to the standard that modern people expect for comfort and use. Simply getting heat, electricity, air conditioning, and lighting into the spaces of an old building can be a costly nightmare. … [cont.]

A. I already explained this to you. If you really want a good college to study architecture, Cooper Union in NYC is the place to go. #1 in the Country. Every student there is on a FULL scholarship. But you have to have an awesome portfolio and great grades to get in. I went to a top ten architecture school, but not Cooper Union - I wish. One thing is in many ways, it is still a non-traditional career for women and you will find a lot of glass ceilings out there. --- They're, Their, There - Three Different Words. What are the purposes of certain geometrical shapes in architecture.?
Q. I'm doing a project for math on the geometrical shapes in architecture and construction and I need sites that can explain how certain shapes work better than others and things like that. For example, why is a suspension bridge made with parabolas? What purpose does the parabola serve? Basically anything like that.
Asked by NY JAGR - Thu May 28 10:21:59 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Often shapes are chosen because they will optimally and evenly distribute a load - and a lot of calculus is needed. Cost of the design is taken into account, so the shapes are often simplified to make them cheaper. In your example of the suspension bridge, the parabola is chosen so that force is directed downwards into the supporting pillars and not at an angle (you will always see suspension cables on both sides of the supporting pillars) If you are considering a stone bridge, the arch shape under the bridge is chosen because in theory there are no tensile stresses in that shape. (Rock has a far higher compressive strength than tensile strength) Shapes are often chosen to be aesthetically pleasing. Look up the "Golden Ratio" is… [cont.]

hire an architecture student for new construction?
Q. Hi, My family is going to open a yoga studio this summer, and we wants to save our budget on interior constructions. We do not know what is government or city regulations for interior constructions about the studio, so we want to hire an interior designer to do it for me. I found that professional designers are very expensive, so I was thinking about hiring an arcitecture student to do so. From blueprint designs and interior design itself. Is it a good idea to do so?
Asked by Michelle - Wed Feb 24 10:55:25 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. The student won't have the experience dealing with the codes and requirements of your city. I would try a small architectural firm, perhaps one that has been in business for 3 to 5 years so they have some expertise but might be less expensive. Shop around, as the economy is impacting everyone's rates these days.

Can someone provide some guidance for a college student earning an electrical engineering degree?
Q. I want to possible do something involving music and entertainment. It may sound silly - maybe even something involving special effects/ testing - similar to the guys on the Discovery Channel Show - MythBusters. Any assistance, advice, or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Along with my engineering courses, I plan to take a theater course in lightning/scenic design. Anyway, please help!!!

A. It doesn't sound silly at all, in fact I admire you for having such commitment. As the parent of a disabled person and an engineer, I believe there are far too few engineers focusing on the needs of the disabled. I don't know how close you are to finishing your degree, but if you still have some classes to take, I'd suggest an acoustics class (probably offered by the Physics department), and some digital signal processing classes (EE department). Stuff about industrial lighting, sound amplification, etc. may not be offered at your university, but you might find an online course, or a short course offered somewhere. In terms of finding a job in those areas, I think you'll have to scour a bit harder to find them. However, think about… [cont.]

A. We settled at St.Anthony Falls (Minneapolis MN) because of fresh water and a falls that we can use for driving a flour and lumber mill. Logs are floated down the river from the forests north of the city. The rich fertile soil west of town is good for raising wheat. The railroad connects us with Chicago and the east where we ship out lumber and flour. We elect a sheriff to maintain law and order. cp

A. That would not be sufficient. You must get the degree in architecture (not just a minor) to work as an architect. According to the US Department of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook, the educational requirements for an architect are as follows: Education and training. In most States, architects must hold a professional degree in architecture from one of the 117 schools of architecture that have degree programs accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). However, State architectural registration boards set their own standards, so graduation from a non-accredited program may meet the educational requirement for licensing in a few States. Most architects earn their professional degree through a 5-year… [cont.]
